BF3 Gas is a colorless gas with an acidic, pungent, persistent odor that hydrolyzes in humid air to form thick white smoke. Inhalation of gas can irritate the respiratory system and cause burns if high concentrations of gas come into contact with the skin. Boron trifluoride dissolves rapidly in water and any organic compound containing nitrogen or oxygen. A vacuum break or trap on the feed line is recommended because the reaction to the above is so rapid that suck back is dangerous.
Suitable metals for equipment handling boron trifluoride include stainless steel, Monel and Hastelloy. When wet, it will corrode steel, including stainless steel. It reacts with polyamide. BF3 is most importantly used as a reagent in organic synthesis, usually as a Lewis acid.
